Val di Cecina – Where Tuscany breathes

Between Volterra and the sea

Here, the Cecina River flows through green forests, rolling hills and wide fields, while old villages built of warm stone watch over the landscape. High above, the Rocca Sillana, a medieval fortress with sweeping views over the valleys, stands as a silent witness to a region that breathes history.

Landscape & nature

The valley combines many faces of Tuscany:
olive groves, vineyards and avenues of cypress trees alternate with oak and chestnut forests. In the southern foothills, steam rises from the earth – the geothermal zone around Larderello, also known as Valle del Diavolo, where nature shows its power.
Numerous nature reserves – such as the Riserva Naturale di Berignone and Monterufoli-Caselli – provide habitats for deer, wild boar, birds of prey and rare plants.

Culture & History

The Val di Cecina is a landscape with deep roots.
Once settled by the Etruscans, later the scene of Roman and medieval power struggles, the region still bears traces of these eras today: ruins, monasteries and stone villages that glow in the evening sun.
In Volterra, the cultural capital of the valley, arts and crafts, history and the Tuscan way of life merge to create an atmosphere that is second to none.

Cuisine & Lifestyle

Here, people live with the earth – not against it.
Agriculture shapes daily life: olive oil, wine, cheese and honey are expressions of a culture based on sustainability and craftsmanship.
The kitchens smell of herbs, bread and wood fires. Typical dishes include game, homemade pasta and full-bodied red wines, which in their simplicity reflect an entire region.

Experience & Discover

With Val di Cecina outdoor, you can explore this valley in all its diversity.
Old paths lead through forests and fields, along the river or up to forgotten vantage points. Whether on foot, by bike or on horseback, each route opens up new perspectives on a landscape that is never in a hurry.
The Val di Cecina is not a place you tick off your list.
It is a place that stays with you – quiet, authentic and deeply Tuscan.
