Alto Tevere – The Quiet Heart of Umbria

Between Green Hills and Ancient Paths

In the north of Umbria, where the Apennines touch Tuscany, lies the Alto Tevere – the Upper Tiber Valley.
It’s a land where time slows down, the air smells of earth and wood, and the landscape unfolds in soft, rhythmic lines that stretch toward the horizon.

The valley follows the flow of the Tevere – the Tiber River – which is born here and silently shapes the life and history of the region.
Between Città di Castello, Montone, Umbertide, and Lisciano Niccone, the land opens into a mosaic of olive groves, wheat fields, chestnut woods, and small villages nestled against the hillsides.

Landscape & nature

The Alto Tevere is a place of rare stillness.
Wide fields blend with oak and chestnut forests, while the Tiber winds through them like a green ribbon.
Hiking trails and ancient mule tracks cross the valley – paths once walked by pilgrims, farmers, and traders. They lead past hermitages, stone bridges, and terraced slopes still cultivated by hand.

In the early mornings, a soft mist floats above the valley as the sun rises slowly over the hills – a quiet ritual that never loses its beauty.

Culture & History

The Alto Tevere is deeply rooted in its past.
In Città di Castello, elegant palaces, towers, and churches speak of centuries of history. The city is also home to the works of Alberto Burri, one of Italy’s most influential contemporary artists, whose legacy turned an old tobacco factory into a world-renowned art space.

Nearby, the medieval village of Montone tells its stories through narrow alleys and stone walls, while in Umbertide, the mighty Rocca fortress still watches over the river.
Throughout the surrounding hamlets, life follows the rhythm of the seasons – measured, grounded, unhurried.

Cuisine & lifestyle

Here, food is as honest as the land itself.
Fresh pasta with truffles, polenta with wild mushrooms, handmade sausages, and golden olive oil are everyday pleasures.
Bread is baked in wood-fired ovens, wine comes from small family estates, and nearly everything on the table grows within sight of the hills.

People here cook not to impress – but to share.

Experience & Discover

The Alto Tevere invites you to slow down.
Walk through the forests of Montone, cycle along the riverbanks, or taste wine in the hills of Umbertide – every moment here feels personal, every view serene.

The valley bridges the light of Tuscany with the depth of Umbria, offering a glimpse of a more genuine Italy – quiet, authentic, and timeless.
